Helping you develop your business skills
A new suite of online guides promoting better business practices and decision-making is now available on MBIE’s website, business.govt.nz.
Created in collaboration with the Institute of Directors, the guides explore all aspects of ‘business governance’, including how to become a better, more effective company director.
Governance is about the checks and balances, and expert advice, needed to keep your business on track. The six new modules look at why good governance is important, and how it can help your business to run smoothly, achieve its goals, and maintain a good reputation.
There’s advice on ‘laying the groundwork’, choosing between governance options, and reviewing your company’s existing structures and activities.
If you’re registering a company for the first time, you’ll want to know exactly what you’re getting into, and how to plot a course for success. To help you get started, there’s a useful self-assessment test.
If you’re running an established company, the assessment tool can also help you take stock of where you’re at, and decide what changes may be needed.
Other new governance tools on the business.govt.nz website include a visual guide of director duties, an agenda template for board meetings, and a worksheet to help you minimise your business risks.
So, whether you’re new to running a company, or an experienced director wanting to take things to the next level, it’s well worth checking out business.govt’s new governance resources.
There’s also a wealth of information for directors, new and old, on the Institute of Directors website.
