Warning on misleading intellectual property invoices

Be aware of misleading invoices offering services to help protect your intellectual property for a fee.

The Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand has noticed an increasing amount of unsolicited or fraudulent intellectual property protection, promotion or advertising services being offered to intellectual property holders.

If you receive any communication about your intellectual property case from anyone other than:

  1. Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) ,
  2. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) , or
  3. your appointed intellectual property professional,

you should treat them with caution, particularly if they are preparing to charge you a fee for the service.

The Commerce Commission has investigated previous misleading invoice incidents, resulting in determinations against their originators.

For more information and examples of misleading invoices, please visit the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office website , or contact them at 0508 447 669.
